How Much Does it Cost To Replace a Conservatory Roof Glass Unit?

There are multiple factors which come together when obtaining the price to replace a glass unit, even more so when that unit is in your conservatory roof. In this article, we will explore what factors need to be considered and most importantly, how they will affect the price of the glass unit.

All glass is bespoke in either its size or specification, a home visit will be required to provide and accurate quotation, however the below will allow you to build a an understand of the price range you may be looking within.

How much will a glass unit cost?

Our mission is to educate and answer all your questions, the common, the technical and of course, the obvious. The most obvious of all – COST?

Well you asked, so we answered.

To help understanding cost in relation to size, below we have split what we would consider to be a small, medium, and large standard shaped glass units for a conservatory roof

Small
– circa 500mm x 500mm

Medium
– circa 800mm x 1000mm

Large
– circa 900mm x 1200mm

A small glass unit can range from £125 through to £160

A medium glass unit can range from £170 through to £240

A large glass unit can range from £240 through to £390

Shaped or standard?

By far the biggest factor which can influence the cost is whether the glass unit is a standard shape or not, a standard shape will either be a rectangle, or square.

If the glass unit is a triangle, or any shape with more than four sides or has at least one curved edge, the price to manufacture that unit can increase from 30% up to 60% depending on the complexity and method of measuring.

Glass Coatings

Glass coatings are present on most modern conservatory roofs. The help control the certain wave lengths of light passing though.

In simple terms, they act like a pair of sunglasses for your conservatory.

Coatings can come in various colour shades and can have self-cleaning properties – great for those roof areas which you can’t quiet reach!

The price for these coatings varies as there is so many to choose from but they can be great to make a conservatory more useable in all seasons. We would advise budgeting for a 20% - 30% increase.

TOP TIP: Make sure you store the paperwork with the original glass specification in a safe place, this makes matching the new glass to your old glass much more straight forward!

Engineer Time

Just as every glass unit is different, so is the access requirement to replace it. If the glass unit is in a hard-to-reach area, even a small unit can take a considerable amount of time to install.

As the unit size increases, the need for access platforms and additional engineers may also be required, and so you should consider this when designing you're conservatory or when budgeting for a glass unit replacement.

So why would you need to change your conservatory roof glass unit?

A glass unit is the most visually important part of your conservatory roof, if its cracked or condensated it can make even the nicest view an eye sore. Even with the correct care and regular cleaning glass units can fail. From our experience, glass units last between 10-20 years.

There are only 2 main reasons why a unit would be classed as reaching its lifespan, number one would be when it’s become cracked or shattered, and number two would be when its failed and become condensated. Condensation happens when the seals holding the unit together fail, allowing moisture inside the unit which then condenses leaving a misty or cloudy window. Replacing just the unit is the quickest, easiest, and most cost-effective way to get your windows back to full health.
