Causes of Misty Windows

Misty windows can be caused by variances in the temperature inside and outside of your home. When there is a severe difference between indoor and outdoor temperature, a mist can occur.

Mist on windows may happen when the seal has been broken. There are many factors that can cause the seal to break such as age, method on installation or excessive heat.

If there is water retention in the frame of your windows or if there is poor drainage around the window, then the window seal can break and let in moisture, which can, in turn, make your windows misty.

If your windows are getting too much sunlight the panes can start to expand and contract rapidly. This will cause them to weaken and damage the window seal.

A poorly fitted window can cause mist to form on your windows. If your windows are double glazed and it is not done correctly you will find that your window panes and frames are not aligned.

By far the biggest cause is time, as with lots of things time flies and 10, 15 or even 20 years comes and goes in the blink of an eye! Glass units last a long time… but not forever! So be aware that your units becoming misty may just be a sign that they have come to the end of their life and are in need of some brand new, crystal clear new ones.

How to Fix Misty Windows

Replacing the sealed glass unit is often the best solution than replacing the whole window.. A misted up window is due to the seal on the glass, which has nothing to do with the frame itself. As long as the frame is in good condition, you simply just need to replace the glass unit. By only using the most efficient glass units on the market, we have built a reputation of nearly 30 years for being a leader in glass unit replacements.
