Why Your UPVC Window Won’t Open (And How to Fix It)

Separator dots graphic

1. Check the Locking Mechanism

Before anything else, make sure the window isn’t simply locked. If the handle turns but there’s no movement, the locking gearbox or mechanism inside the frame has likely failed. This doesn’t mean the whole window needs replacing — the locking gear can usually be removed and replaced at a fraction of the cost of a full window!

2. Failed or Damaged Hinges

Window hinges do an enormous amount of work over time. Constant opening and closing, exposure to the elements, and pressure from wind can bend, wear or seize them up. When hinges fail, the window may stick or refuse to swing open smoothly. Replacing worn hinges restores movement and can prevent further wear on other parts.

👉 Remember! Gaps around your windows when they're closed are also a sign of broken or worn hinges.

3. Misalignment or Out-of-Square Frames

If a window isn’t square within its frame, its sash can bind and jam. This is often caused by poor installation or gradual movement over time. Skilled adjustment — including hinge repacking and hardware resetting — can often bring the window back into alignment so it opens easily again.

4. Failed Gaskets & Seals

Rubber seals and gaskets around the sash are designed to keep drafts out, but over time, these can become brittle and perish, leaving your window draughty and allow the elements in! Lucky, the majority of gaskets can be rpelaced, so you dont need a whole new window!

When to Call a Professional

If you’ve checked the lock, hinges, and seal and the window still won’t open, or if you’re unsure what’s causing the fault, it’s best to let a trained expert assess the issue. Trying to force a jammed window can cause broken handles, stripped gears, and frame damage — making the repair more expensive in the long run.

Why Repair Is Often Better Than Replace

The good news with UPVC windows is that most faults are in mechanical parts — hinges, handles, locks, glass units — and not the frame itself. These components are almost always replaceable, meaning you can get your window working again without the expense of a brand-new unit.
