When you’re sitting in your lounge next to the ‘draughty’ window looking out over your garden the first thing you think about is probably going to be ‘How much do new window hinges cost? This window is so draughty!

What types of window hinges are there?

When it comes to window hinges, there are 3 main types which need to be understood.

- Standard Friction Window Hinges:
Friction hinges are the most common type of hinge found on top hung and side hung UPVC windows. They allow a basic operation of opening and closing the window using friction to hold the window at the desired point.

- Fire Escape Window Hinges:

These are like the standard, however, allow the widow casement to open to a wider angle allowing a person to use as an exit in an emergency.

Top tip:
The simple way to see if your hinge is fire escape specification is to open it up fully, if the casement opens to 90 degrees, then you probably have fire escape hinges.

Fire escape window satisfy the emergency exit requirements of approved Document B which is part of the Uk Building Regulations. Generally, Fire escape hinges are legally required to be installed in windows above ground level, if you’re unsure when they should be used, your service technician can help determine this on your quotation survey.

- Restricted Window Hinges:

These do exactly what they sat on the tin! The restrict the amount the window opens, usually up to 100mm. So, when are these useful? Well, they can be used for child safety, vulnerable people’s rooms or to allow you to have your window open in the summer while maintaining some security.

Are window hinges the cause of your draughty windows?

Often, the first thing people blame for causing a draughty window is the rubber seals. Although this can be part of the problem, in our experience around 80% of draughty windows are caused by the window hinges being broken, twisted, or heavily warn out.

Once one of these has happened, the hinges in most cases fail to close correctly, leaving gaps around the casement on not closing square with the frame, allowing those cold draughts to whistle though!

Used on windows that legally require a means to escape, these hinges range from £101 - £140. (inc VAT)

Restricted Window Hinges:
These style of hinges range in price from £101 - £140. (inc VAT) This price range includes the supply of the pair of hinges, as well as the installation and re-alignment of the window casement in the frame once the hinges have been fitted.
